Our project

Terrestrial Mars simulation stations such as ALQUEVA are valuable infrastructures with a high investment in resources and embodied energy ¹. Following the end of the EU-funded EXPLORE project as part of the ERASMUS+ program, there is currently no concept for its subsequent use. The station offers potential as an educational site, research platform and tourist destination.

 

The aim of this project was to develop a strategically sound after-use concept that achieves at least an economic break-even, i.e. the point at which the income covers the running costs. In addition to economic viability, social and educational aspects of use should also be taken into account. Our research question was:
“How can the Mars simulation station ALQUEVA be used in an economically sustainable way?”

To this end, we first defined the following target groups for subsequent use:

We used these to conduct interviews with experts in order to obtain the perspectives of all target groups. In addition, supplementary interviews were conducted with experts in order to gain general insights into the context of the vacancy and the associated utilization options.

We also created scenario models with current market figures and reference values for costs, occupancy and sales price margins.

The results confirm a diverse reuse potential for terrestrial Mars simulation stations such as ALQUEVA. These are in line with the existing literature and show that multiple use of such infrastructures is possible - provided that scientific standards and integrity are maintained⁵. Sustainability is proving to be a key issue here: in addition to embodied energy,¹ factors such as travel, energy supply and social inclusion are also coming into focus. From an economic perspective, hybrid projects require a deep understanding of dynamic markets, clearly defined target groups and innovative business models. Offers with an exclusive profile and high quality content are particularly promising.
